The usual story about an untidy small home is that the people in it lack willpower. It is almost always wrong.
A small home that will not stay tidy is nearly always one where the tidy position of an object is further away, or more effort, than the untidy one. People are consistent: they put things where it is easiest to put them. So the work is not to try harder — it is to move the easy position.
The Small Space Handbook is a twenty-eight page method built on that single idea. It measures before it buys, removes before it stores, and puts storage where the mess already forms rather than where it looks best. It assumes small rooms, old buildings, and a tenancy agreement that says no to holes in the wall.

How it is written
One rule, applied everywhere
An object stays where you put it when putting it away costs less effort than leaving it out. Every technique in the book is a way of lowering that cost — fewer steps, fewer doors, no lifting something else first. Test any storage idea against it before you spend anything, and most of the expensive mistakes stop happening.
Buying comes last, and it is a short list
Almost every small home contains expensive empty storage bought before anything was measured or removed. The book puts shopping in the final chapter, after your own notes have told you your dimensions, what has no home and which barriers are too high. If the resulting list is longer than seven things, it says so.
Written for a home you do not own
Renting is the normal case, not the exception. There is a chapter on fixing things to walls you are not allowed to drill: over-door hooks, tension rods, freestanding weight, picture rails, and honest limits on what adhesive fixings will and will not hold. Including what to photograph before you fit anything.
The mess is a map
A pile that keeps reappearing in the same place is telling you that things need to live there. A shelf that is always messy is holding the wrong category. The last chapters treat every recurring failure as information about where the home does not match the life in it — which is faster than resolve, and works on a bad week.

Is this useful if I rent?
That is who it is written for. There is a full chapter on fixing things without drilling — over-door hangers, tension rods, freestanding weight, picture rails and the real load limits of adhesive fixings — and the rest of the book assumes you cannot make permanent changes.
Do I have to throw a lot away?
No. The removal chapter is built around an undecided box precisely so you do not have to be certain about anything — it is sealed, dated, and opened in six months. The method is designed to be finishable, which the usual advice often is not.
Will it tell me what to buy?
Only at the end, and only from your own notes. Buying storage before measuring and removing is the most common and most expensive mistake in a small home, so the shopping list is deliberately the last thing in the book.
